Annual Exams and Pap Smears

An annual exam is a preventive visit to go over your overall health. The purpose is to identify health risks or issues and make changes to reduce those risks or address the issues before they become problematic. During this visit, a complete history and physical will be performed.  Age and risk appropriate labs and imaging will be offered/ordered. A few of the tests that we routinely order if indicated are listed below.


Our office is able to order a full range of labs.  We utilize Labcorp, Medical Diagnostic Laboratories, and Myriad Genetics.  A few of the labs we most commonly order are listed below.

Pap Smear- A screen for cervical cancer or pre-cancerous changes of the cervix starting at age 21

HPV Testing- A screen for Human Papilloma Virus which causes genital warts, abnormal pap smears, and cervical cancer. We typically order this test if your pap smear result shows Atypical Cells of Undetermined Significance 

STD Testing- Optional for all patients. We offer screening for gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis, and herpes.

Complete Blood Count- Blood test that screens for anemia, infection, leukemia, or platelet disorders

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone- A screen for hyper or hypothyroidism

Follicle Stimulating Hormone- A screen to see if someone has entered menopause

Glucose Tolerance Test- A screen for diabetes

Prolactin- A test that is elevated in patients with galactorrhea which can be caused by a pituitary adenoma or breastfeeding

BRCA Screening-a genetic test that detects the presence of a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation. BRCA mutations are responsible for the majority of hereditary breast and ovarian cancers 


Pelvic Ultrasound- Ordered in our office if indicated to assess the size of the uterus, cervix, and ovaries

Mammogram-Recommended yearly starting at age 40. Earlier for patients that are high risk

Bone Density Screening- A DEXA scan is ordered if indicated to assess Bone Mineral Density to screen for osteoporosis


Flu Vaccine- Given yearly to reduce the risk of catching influenza

Gardasil Vaccine- A series of 3 vaccines to protect against infection with Human Papilloma Virus that causes genital warts, abnormal pap smears, and cervical cancer. Recommended for ages 9 to 26

Tdap Vaccine- A vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis

Colonoscopy- Recommended starting at age 50 for low risk patients

Dermatology- We offer referral to a dermatologist an annual skin exam

Dietician- We offer referrals for patients to meet with certified dieticians to go over dietary changes to improve their overall health

Psychologist/Psychiatrist- Helpful if needed for improvement of symptoms such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or eating disorders

We work in coordination with a large group of specialists and can assist in getting our patients in to see them if the annual exam uncovers a problem outside of our area of expertise.
